126th KUASS: KYOTO UNIVERSITY AFRICAN STUDIES SEMINAR
Wildlife, the forgotten resource: a focus on Africa
内容
This lecture aims to rekindle the recognition of wildlife as a vital resource, integral to ecological balance and human well-being, with a particular focus on Africa and the sustainable use of its wildlife resources. Africa, home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, offers a unique perspective on the importance of wildlife. The continent’s ecosystems provide essential services such as pollination, seed dispersal, and natural pest control, which are crucial for maintaining biodiversity and supporting human livelihoods. We will explore the ecological, social and economic benefits derived from wildlife. The lecture will highlight the challenges faced by wildlife populations, including habitat destruction, climate change, and poaching, and examine the consequences of neglecting this precious resource. Finally, the lecture will propose strategies for conservation and sustainable management of wildlife in Africa, advocating for a harmonious coexistence that ensures the longevity of this forgotten resource for future generations. By the end of the lecture, attendees will hopefully gain a deeper appreciation of wildlife’s indispensable role and be motivated to contribute to its preservation.
